In Memoriam 1954-2014

I speak Southern.”

Henry West Hicks, a Florida Bar Board Certified Real Estate Expert, helped people in Florida with their real estate legal needs for over 31 years.  Henry was a North Carolina native and obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976 and his Juris Doctorate from Tulane Law School in New Orleans in 1979.  Henry treasured his Southern heritage and “spoke Southern,” as he called his slight drawl.  Henry moved to Tampa, Florida, in 1979 and was admitted to the Florida Bar that same year.  He worked as in-house counsel for Uiterwyck Corporation, an international shipping company, from 1979 through January 1981 when he formed the Law Office of Henry W. Hicks, P.A. now known as Hicks Whiteside, P.A.  From that time on, Henry enjoyed a varied legal career and dedicated himself to helping clients with matters involving business law, corporations, commercial real estate, secured transactions, business transactions, commercial litigation, mortgage foreclosure, mortgage defense, landlord/tenant, title insurance disputes and claims, construction, condemnation, mechanics liens, probate, and trusts.

In 1990, Henry became a licensed and appointed Florida title insurance agent for Attorney’s Title Fund Services, LLC, and, in 2001, opened TitleMark of South Tampa, LLC, to complement his real estate law practice.  In addition to practicing law, Henry was an adjunct professor in the graduate school of education at Nova Southeastern University.  Henry owned various businesses including a strawberry farm, a 144-room hotel, a mobile home park, and a popular restaurant.  Henry was beloved by the students he coached in basketball and mentored for a decade at a local Christian high school, leading the team to victory in the state championship one year and maintaining a team that was always competitive.

For nearly 35 years, Henry served his clients with diligence and dedication.  Henry liked to remind his own team that we must take the time to see things from the clients’ perspective in order to properly serve them. Through that skill, Henry was able to put words to the justice of his clients’ causes. Henry was a great attorney and an even better friend, advisor, mentor, teacher, and counselor.  Henry is missed by all who had the privilege to know him.  We continue to work at this firm in honor of Henry West Hicks.
